  • Trend Micro claims there's a virus in McGruff SafeGuard

Trend Micro may pop-up a warning that there's a virus PAK_GENERIC.001

As Trend Micro states "This is the Trend Micro detection for possibly malicious executable files that are compressed using Win32 compression tools. This proactive detection also includes appending viruses found in the wild".  In other words, Trend Micro pops this up whenever you download something with the ".EXE" filetype.

McGruff SafeGuard software is packaged into an EXE file (usually popHome.exe).  If you want to install McGruff SafeGuard, you should tell Trend Micro that the file is OK.

The following steps was provided by a user when the above steps did not work.  The solution is a bit involved:

1. click on Network Security
2. click on Personal Firewall
3. click on Manage Profile
4. highlight the Home Network Connection that I use
5. click on Edit
6. click on Exceptions
7. click on Add
8. check Specified Applications - also give the application a name in the "Description" at the top (such as McGruff SafeGuard)
9. check Outgoing
10. click on Browse
11. click on the down arrow next to "Click On"
12. click on C Drive
13. click on Windows
14. click on System32
15. click on Spoolsv
16. click on Allow, and then O.K.

I then went through the same process and checked off "Incoming" rather than "Outgoing".  I repeated for each of the programs in the McGruff SafeGuard suite.
